CommentsOf all the various duties I pulled in the U.S. Navy I believe the my tour aboard the Wabash was by far the best. We had a good command and a great crew.
CommentsRode the Wabash with the COMSERVRON 9 Staff during '72-'73 time frame as a RM1...Great Ship and Great Crew..

CommentsI was part of the Pre-commissioning crew at General Dynamics Corporation, Quincy, MA and had the honor of watching our ship grow (literally) day by day until they turned her over to we the crew. We set sail out of the shipyard and on the initial backing exercise, the Piolt struck a building across the waterway from the shipyard, thus we sustained our first collision which left a heafty dent to the fantail. I served aboard through the end of 1973 and retired from the Navy in September 1975.
CommentsHey great site. I remembered a few people from the pics. I was on board from 1986-1990. People will know me as jc or slowy thanks to one of the cooks who nicknamed me that when I did my mess duties. I was so laid back that that is what he(cannot remember his name) started calling me that. I got the nickname jc because they had a cj for BM2 Jones so they decided to call me jc. Again thanks for the site and great job. I did find an old pic of the ship so I will get it scanned and send it on. I also still have a pic of me when we went through Wog Day in 1990. Take care.

There were many faces that I instantly recognized. Even thought I was on the ship for about 7 months it was enough to leave an impression on me. After all it was a CHAPTER in my life. For those who might read this I was an SK3 when I came on board after immediately after docking in Long Beach.

CommentsGreat site. I served in first division from 1987-1991. I was truely bummed when I found out the Bash was being decomissioned, Its like finding out a house you grew up in is being torn down. CommentsI served on Wabash from late 72' to early 75' in X Div. Can never forget the long, long, long hours doing non-stop unreps off the Vietnam coast or the even longer hours between curfew and dawn in Olongapo. Would like to get in touch with Tom Foreman (H Div) or Harry Moore (X Div) if anyone knows how to reach them. Also, I hope to post some pictures in the near future.

CommentsOnboard 1988 - 1991 Great site. I would like to thank all who mentoring me during my time at Cannonball Express. Before I started to supply, I was in First Division and thank for all your support and great advice.
CommentsPlank owner, rounded the horn, Saw P.I. for first time, Tialand. Left in 1973 for a Tin Can out of japan. Lots of GREAT memories.
CommentsE Division 77-82!! Served during the Ayatollahs Xmas Cruise of 79.
CommentsI want to thank those that have started and maintained this site which is a link to an unforgetable past rejouvenated only as much as those who want to share.
CommentsEnjoyed reading the comments! I served 11/85 through 12/87 in OW Division. I often reflect back to those unique days as a crewmember of the Bash in the final years of the Cold War. The Wabash was a hard working ship.
CommentsI served on her as a DK3 from 78-80. Great ship and we really worked her during the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 79 where we had to keep the task force stocked up. I'll never forget the great times we had. Laying in the sun on her decks. Jogging on the lower deck and attending the barbeques/parties. I learned a lot on that ship. It was like a parent to me. I learned about accounting and computers. The BASH and her crew did a great job rescuing the Vietanese refugees and I know these people were very grateful to us and the ship. It was a great experience that will live with me the rest of my life. For the friends I remember and stay in contact with: SKSN Bruce Moser still lives in San Francisco today and he is doing well. ET3 Rick Hattabaugh lives somewhere in Southern California, but he has chosen to go his own way. SK3 Ken Bowlds lives near Portland, OR and has a wonderful family. If anyone knows the whereabouts for LT. Labonty, I would enjoy saying hi. Later... DK3 Rumrill.
CommentsIt was great seeing the pictures of the guys from First Div. I served from 1982 to 1886,hope to here from some of you soon.
CommentsTHIS IS A GOOD SITE. SERVED 79-82 "B" DIV. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT W/SEVERAL "BT'S" OVER THE YEARS.
CommentsHello All, I was a QM in the Navigation department from 74 to 78. I made some artwork for the cruise book for the 79 cruise and I gave the ship some artwork for the chief's quarters and officer's wardroom when I was aboard for the Tiger cruise in 1980. I'd be interested in learning from some of the later crew members how long the artwork hung around. The picture in the chief's area was a watercolor of the ship sailing into the sunset. The one for the officers was a black and white picture of the ship making a rescue of some of the Vietnamese boat people. I'm also interested in making a list of all of the collisions that the ship had with other ships and large immovable objects. Right now I'm up to five. I found this website by seeing an announcement for the re-union in a recent issue of the magazine Sea Classics.

CommentsI just came across your site. I think it was back in '77. My recruiter got me on board for an overnight shake down cruise to get a taste of navy life. We left Oakland and sailed west under the gate, 200 miles out and then back. I was teamed up with one of the "deck apes"; little short guy with a naked lady tatoo on his back. I remember the chow was good. I remember the UA smokes on deck and getting to sea sick to smoke the joint I brought on board. I never joined up after that. Went to Rhodesia instead . . . mistake. Thanks for some fond memories. Cheers!

CommentsRode the Cannonball with Comservron 9 staff, when she was Flagship for CTG 73.5, as a Staff Radioman, in 1972-1973. Captain Bromley was Commodore. I remember that his and the Wabash CO's favorite pastime was shooting at flying fish, with M16's, from the bridgewings. We transferred to the USS Mars after the 'Bash finished her Westpac tour. The old Cannonball was a great ship with a bunch of Class "A" hackers for a crew. Seems like only yesterday that we were riding those buses from Sattahip to Bangkok and getting trashed on the gallon-sized bottles of Singh Hai beer that the driver sold for about $.50 a bottle. Those were times that I wouldn't trade for anything.
CommentsI joined the precommissioning crew in the fall of 1971 in Boston. Still have my plank owner plank hanging on the wall of my den. Served from 1971 - 1975 aboard the Cannonball. Had some great times going around the horn and on several WESTPACS with a great bunch of shipmates. Served as Lt. Galvin's yeoman in OPS Dept. until making YN3 and moving to Admin below deck. CommentsThe older I get the fonder the memories. How many remember waking up in Olongapo to the "jar-heads" calling everyone back to their "boats" because President Carter has sent us to the "IO"? Remember getting off and drinking warm Miller beer in front of the four lane bowling alley on Diego Garcia? The brawl in the EM Club? Man how things have changed! For some reason, the Good Lord allowed us to go through that stuff. Yeah, God found me, slapped me around alot and somehow let me be one of His children. On the boat from '79 to '82. Drop me an email, guys. I live in Oakley,CA.
